Kurinchiththean Book

A major cross-cutting undertaking was the preparation of a book that compiled material about AWWA, women in Akurana, and matters of concern particularly to women and information of use to those in Akurana. This book ran into 84 pages and had content in Tamil, English, and Sinhala.

The publication of Kurinchithean was initiated with funding from a donor which was augmented by loans by members which led to a collection of Rs 80,000 short of Rs 112,000 printing cost. Thereafter the magazine was printed with a loan from the Chair to cover the gap.

The book was launched at Akurana Azhar Central College at an event held on March 10, 2010. Along with the distribution of books, voluntary donations were solicited. This led to a collection of Rs. 400,000. These funds and the impact of the book led to a major boost in profile and energy of AWWA. Thereafter the membership doubled from 75 to up to 150.

Already work has commenced on the difficult task of collecting content for the next issue with Educational Sub-Committee taking the lead. A theme has been suggested is “Womens Education – What for and Where to?”
