Formation and Organization

Akurana Women’s Welfare Association AWWA) was initiated in 1981 by six teachers at Azhar Central College – Marliya Zubair, Mazeena Rasheed, Zahira Sulaiman, Mazeena Sulaiman, Muzammila Jaward and Mufeedha Aroos.The organization became more active after 2001 as these members were able to devote time and energy. Since then AWWA members have been meeting every month. The membership had expanded to around 15 by 2001. A committee was elected by the members.A constitution was developed in 2001. Marliya Zubair was installed as Lifetime Chairperson as an honorary post. A motto was agreed on as

“Womens enterprise leads to societal upliftment”

Registration with Local Government

In 2002.10.31, AWWA was registered as a welfare association with the Provincial Government at the Divisional Secretariat level and the District level. This led to collaboration and support from the local government.

Programs and Projects

With the membership rising to 40 active members in 2008, AWWA decided to organize seven program areas: Education, Health, Environment and Home Gardening, Micro-Industries and Vocational Training, Religious and Cultural, External Relations, and Finance. Around thirty 30 projects have been executed in health awareness sessions, household composting, and home gardening and training and training in computing and Sinhala languages.

Work with AGA office, Pradeshiya Sabha, Newsview, FECT and Other Organizations

AWWA also contributed to programs by other organizations – including the Dengue programs , the Pinga Oya Symposium and the Schools Environment Day for six schools in the Akurana Pradheshiya Sabhawa conducted by the Foundation for Environment, Climate and Technology.

Registration with Ministry of Womens Affair

In view of the expanding programs, AWWA was requested to register with the Ministry of Womens Affairs. AWWA has been registered on 2007.03.21 in the Ministry of Women Affairs.

Office and Library

AWWA opened a dedicated office on second floor of the AGA office in Akurana in 200x. This office was obtained from the provincial government and it serves as the venue of the committee meetings, special meetings and hosts a library.

Website and Social Media

AWWA has been intending to launch a presence on the Internet for several years. A website was developed and sponsored by the Foundation for Environment, Climate and Technology in late 2016. A mailing list, twitter and Facebook account is being developed.

Recognition for AWWA

AWWA was recognized as the first and second best Womens Society in the Kandy level 2010. It was also recognized as the best performing Womens Society in the Central Province in 2011. In other years, it has been recognized among the top performing womens societies in the region. AWWA members are routinely invited for local government functions and even to an event hosted by the then President of the country
